Gilbert’s 110-acre Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch is a unique combination of a wildlife habitat, a recreational and educational area, and a facility for water reclamation. The park features seven aquifer recharge basins that capture the treated effluent from the town’s wastewater treatment plant.
The preserve is a popular destination for hikers, birders and nature watchers. It has 4.5 miles of hiking trails and interpretive education panels on vegetation and wildlife. The Gilbert Historical Society began meeting in 1960 and had been collecting items from the early days of Gilbert but did not have a permanent building to call their own. The Historical Society leased the school and its three acres from Gilbert Public Schools in 1982 and opened the Museum that year. In 1985 the Society was able to purchase the building and its three acres from Otto and Edna Neely through a generous donation. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has become a Gilbert landmark.
